#AContinuation25 Part 6: Proust
Hello everyone! It’s time to start Part 6 of #AContinuation25, a follow-up to last year’s #KateBriggs24 project. Inspired by Roland Barthes’s love of Marcel Proust, we will read In Search of Lost Time. We are planning a very slow reading of a very long novel (talk about the long form!). We will cover about 40 pages per week.
First up is Swann’s Way, which we will read from August 2nd through mid November. You’ll find Kim’s page guide here. The guide is based on The Modern Library Classics Paperback Edition, translated by C.K. Scott Moncrieff and Terence Kilmartin, but feel free to read whatever translation you like and also at whatever pace you like. I have Lydia Davis’s translation of Swann’s Way on my shelves, so I’ll be reading that one. Maybe we can compare translations along the way.
Feel free to leave comments on this post and also to follow the discussion on Bluesky and Instagram with the hashtag #AContinuation25.
How did your reading of The Neutral go? I finished much later than I planned, wrapping it up only a couple weeks ago, but it’s a book that can be read slowly and shouldn’t be rushed through. I loved it and am sad that I’ve now finished all the lecture courses, although, of course, they are perfect for rereading.
If you’d like more information on this project, make sure to check out Kim’s website, which has a wealth of resources on Kate Briggs, Roland Barthes, and much more.
Take care everyone!
Rebecca and Kim
